This section is growing slowly, but we could do better. With all the talent shows, magic shows, theatrical and musical performances, and May Day celebrations that livened up the school auditorium and school grounds over the years,  there must be pictures somewhere that are collecting mildew when they should be here. If you have some of those, e-mail  the webmaster.

4th Grade Harvest King and Queen 1967--Chris Sorensen and Paula McDuffie
After intense lobbying by Ms. Edna Fikes (standing in the vehicle doorway), Ms. Flora Mann (far right), Ms. Clara Skelton (left center), and Ms. Louise Pennington, the County powers, in 1958, agreed to  bring the County Bookmobile to Mineral Springs School during summer vacation. This gave local students easy access to books for their summer reading. The Bookmobile typically served about 50 summer readers, some of whom are shown in this photo from about 1960.

Some of the young readers who welcomed a Bookmobile visit. The two youngsters in front are Carol Jane Bates (left) and Dennis Ray Bates. The tall girl in the back is Regina England. Others are as yet unidentified.

Harvest Queen ca. 1946 (Louise Hodges)
The annual Harvest Festivals were important fundraisers for the P.T.A. Each of the four school communities--Mineral (Dogtown), Fieldstown, Coalburg, and Republic--selected a young lady to be the prospective Harvest Queen. The same competition took place in the spring as the May Queen was crowned. The communities competed to raise the most money.
Eloise Phillips from Fieldstown was May Queen of 1948 and was escorted by J. T. Pennington of Coalburg.  The couple went to Minor High School May Day as representatives of Mineral School.
